Industry Meets Government to Warn of Power Cuts this Winter

- Head of CBI, Sir Digby Jones warns Government that British companies could face power blackouts this winter. Met Energy Minister Malcolm Wickes to tell him they struggling with energy price rises of up to 70% over the past 2 years.

- Tony Crotty, Chief Exec of Ineos Chlor, one of biggest energy users in country, says gas storage capacity pathetically small in UK compared with somewhere like Germany which means if very cold snap in winter, we can only ride it out for few days, as happened last Feb/March and prices went from 30p/therm to £2.00.

- Alan Asher, Chief Exec of Energywach says we are only likely to have power cuts if we have a severe winter. Still plenty of gas around.
- Problem is market structure and difficulty in getting gas from Russian and North Africa through pipes that aren't owned locally.
- Only a handful of companies produce gas and they have interests in big transmission pipes and storage.
- They don't give very much information to users who are forced to buy often on very short term markets.
- Whole market structure starting to break down. We don't have good forward markets giving security of supply, hence panics and huge prices & dislocation.
- Asher thinks Energy Minister should encourage more storage here and encourage our market to be more competitive.
- Force Europe into liberalised system that will give access to pipelines and storage to competitors, so we can have a good forward market with lots of gas traders.
- Prevent the 'oligopoly' from making excessive profits.

The refusal of other EU member states to open up their energy markets, the high cost of UK electricity and gas, possible fuel shortages, the shrinking number of suppliers, dithering over new nuclear plant, and tough new taxes being imposed by the British government and the European Commission are among the issues which will be raised by a UK Energy Industry Delegation to Brussels on 17-18 October.
